Gilbertson Shaw assisted a well-known Utilities provider

Gilbertson Shaw assisted a well-known Utilities provider to install and embed a behavioural safety programme in order to reduce human error resulting in underground service strikes.

As part of that programme an accident costing study was conducted determining that each service strike was costing in excess of £50,000.

There had been 20 such strikes in the preceding 5 years costing approximately £1 million.

Over the following 12 months period Gilbertson Shaw reduced service strikes by 20% saving £200,000.

As a result Gilbertson Shaw was invited to speak on human performance and service strikes at the LSBUD service strikes conference in June 2018.

A Principal Contractor wanted to engage in behavioural change

A Principal Contractor wanted to engage in behavioural change as they believed that a number of accidents were related to unsafe acts. Gilbertson Shaw proposed a 4 stage programme as follows:

  • Stage 1 – Management Education comprising an introduction to the basics of behavioural science, why people do what they do, basic motivations etc.
  • Stage 2 – Removal of unsafe conditions on site with clear direction of the importance of unsafe conditions in the accident causation chain.
  • Stage 3 – Supervisory process and training involving techniques of Observation and Correction along with how to make effective, positive interventions and recording of same to enhance leading indicators whilst reducing lagging indicators (accidents).
  • Stage 4 – operatives training involving typical accident causation, dynamic risk assessment and other key characteristics involved in accidents.
